Karthus was born in the slums of Noxus. His mother tragically died while giving birth to Karthus, leaving Karthus and his three sisters in the care of his father. They were living in poverty and shared a rat-infested home with several other families.
Amongst the children, Karthus was the best one at catching the rats that made up their main food source.
Death was all around Karthus during his childhood. Parents would lament the passing of their children on a regular basis. Karthus would watch the tally-men of Kindred notch their staffs each time they took a body.
He soon became obsessed with death and would sneak through the cramped rooms, seeking those who were about to die. Karthus wanted to witness the moment when a soul would pass from this life to the next. For years, he was denied this spectacle, until his family became ill.
Because of the unsanitary conditions in the slums, disease often prevailed among the people. Karthus’s sisters came down with a sickness that eventually consumed them. Karthus was the one who watched over and cared for them before death.
Seeing each sister pass into the next life caused Karthus to yearn for unlocking the secrets of eternity and seeing what lies beyond this life. He followed the tally-men that came for his sister’s bodies.
At their temple, Karthus asked them about their work and how death works.
The tally-men quickly saw in Karthus a suitability for their order and inducted Karthus into their ranks. Karthus became a grave digger and then eventually, a corpse collector.
As a corpse collector, Karthus pushed his cart all over Noxus, gathering the dead. He would sing mournful laments as he worked. Many took solace in his songs and felt peace in Karthus’s heartfelt elegies.
Eventually, Karthus was able to work in the temple, tending to the sick in their final moments. He would talk to each person before they passed, hoping to crack the secrets of death.
Karthus realized he could learn no more from mortals. Only the dead could answer his questions. He decided to go to The Shadow Isles where it is said that death is not the end.
Buying passage to on a ship, Karthus went to Bilgewater, a city plagued by a black mist said to draw souls to a cursed island. Once there, Karthus finally found a fisherman with lots of debt and nothing to lose to take him to the island.
After many days at sea, a storm drove them to an island and a black mist rolled out from it towards them. The fisherman turned his boat around to flee, but Karthus dove into the water and waded to shore. With his tally-staff in tow, he sang his song awaiting death. His words were carried to the heart of the island.
The black mist did flow through Karthus, stripping his flesh away with ancient sorcery. Karthus’s desire to transcend mortality made it so he did not die. Instead, Karthus was remade, neither dead or alive.
Being filled with the beauty of this new state, Karthus knew this was where he wanted to be, poised between life and death. Wretched spirits of the island came to behold his transformation.
Realizing he had to return to Valoran and share this gift, he returned, freeing anyone he met from the bonds of mortality.
Seeing the fisherman who brought him to the isles, he ended this poor suffering mortal’s life, making him immortal. The fisherman was the first of many souls that Karthus has freed.
Now he commands a legion of unliving wraiths. Always present around death, Karthus’s laments can be heard when the Black Mist rolls in to free souls from death.

A story about Karthus
This champion can be played in the Mid Lane, Top Lane, in the Bot Lane as Support or even in the Jungle. Karthus is not too difficult to play at first but does require some practice.
Every champion in League of Legends has a passive and 4 abilities which are used by pressing “Q”, “W”, “E”, and “R” on a keyboard during game play. “R” is considered an ultimate ability and is usually the most powerful ability. Each ability has a cool down, which means you have to wait some time before you can cast it again.
Karthus’s abilities use mana. So you will have to watch your mana bar during the game. If your mana runs out, you will not be able to cast spells until it fills up.
Passive – Death Defied. Each time Karthus dies, he enters a spirit form. He cannot move during this time, but can continue to cast spells.
Q – Lay Waste. Karthus will unleash a delayed blast at a location which will deal damage to nearby enemies. Isolated enemies will take more damage.
W – Wall Of Pain. This ability allows Karthus to create a passable wall. Enemy units that pass through this wall will have their Movement Speed and Magic Resist reduced.
E – Defile. There is a passive with this ability. Karthus will gain Mana with each unit killed. When you activate this ability, Karthus will do damage to all nearby enemies, and your mana will drain for however long it is activated. Turn it off to conserve mana.
R – Requiem. Karthus will channel for 3 seconds and do damage to all enemy champions after the channel.
How To Play Karthus
Karthus is a champion that can be played in many roles. He was made for Mid Lane, but now he is good in several roles. Follow this if you are going to play him in the Mid Lane, or the Top Lane.
During lane, start with your Q. The low mana cost makes it so you can use it a lot to harass your opponent. There is a delay between casting and when the damage applies, so you have to time it just right to land the damage on your opponent.
Take your E next and last minions as much as possible. You will get mana back for each unit you take down. Use the ability when you are around a lot of targets to deal damage to everything around you.
At level 3, put another level in Q and at level 4, take your W. Your W is great at preventing an enemy from ganking you. Any enemy that moves through your W will be drastically slowed.
When you hit level 6, take your R and use it to take down low health enemies, wherever they are. This ability is a global ability, meaning you will damage any champion, no matter where they are on the map.
Each time you die, use your Q as much as possible to do damage before you have to respawn. You can also use your W to slow enemies down and your R, but your E is already active.
Tips And Tricks
Try to use your Q on enemies that are alone. They will take more damage.
During team fights, try to die in the middle of the fight. You can still do damage with your spells.
Use your Q on bushes and areas that you do not have vision of as it grants vision.
While you are playing, keep an eye on the enemy champions. Use your R when they are low in order to take them down. Remember, you cannot move while your R channels, so make sure you are in a safe place before using your R.
If you slow the enemy down with your W, it will be easier to land damage from your Q’s and they will take more damage because of their magic resist being lowered.
Karthus In The Jungle
If you play Karthus in the Jungle, level up your abilities in the same order. Start with Blue Buff so you can use your E when taking down the jungle camps.
When ganking with Karthus, you only have your E that will be useful. Use it to slow the enemy down so your team can get closer to them. Land as many Q’s as you can and use your W to do more damage.
Always look for taking down enemies with your R from a safe place. You can also wait until you die to use it safely.
